Opening Remarks in FEATI U

PAARL in cooperation with FEATI University Library Public Forum on Assessment Techniques and Principles in Applying Standards for Academic Libraries held on February 5, 2009 at FEATI University Library, Sta.. Cruz, Manila

Good Afternoon everyone. PAARL thanks each and every one of you here for taking the time out to join us in this activity.

Let me also say thank you to the FEATI University administration, and to the FEATI University Library and its Chief Librarian Ms. Aida Santos and her staff. Thank you for providing the venue, for welcoming us here, for and for your continued support of the various activities of PAARL.

It is with the best intention that PAARL conceptualized and planned for this Forum. The main objective here is to provide an avenue to discuss the pressing issues and concerns of librarians and information professionals in relation to library standards such as: existing and emerging library standards applicable to academic and research libraries, expectations and perceptions, strategies that should help in meeting if not surpassing these standards. We expect to hear from you and share RLE related learning experiences) in handling the process of documentations and inspections. We would also appreciate hearing from you ideas, suggestions and what have you on how we should decide on updating our ten year old PAARL Standards.

Indeed we are fortunate because we have with us this afternoon the very people, the authorities, so to speak, who can enlighten us on these concerns.

So, in behalf of the PAARL Board and members, we say Thank You and may we all have a fruitful afternoon.

Sunga is Superb and Delights PAARL's Forum Attendees

High ceilings, glass doors and walls complimenting an elegant stairs to second floor of C&E Information and Resource Center in Quezon Boulevard welcomed more than a hundred participants to PAARL's successful half-day training workshop on “Oral English Proficiency Skills for Librarians and Information Professionals” with the country’s English language guru and trainer, Dr. Nilda R. Sunga as resource speaker.

Sunga, former PNU faculty, received more than a hand but won admirers the minute she took the C & E podium while audience looked directly at her and listened enthrallingly. Her grace, skills and virtuosity as speech guru had captured her audience and surely will endear her to everyone who was around. Also, the forum was cognitively appealing, therapeutic, and top notch brought by non-stop laughters and applauses going on inside the soon-to-be-launched state-of-the-art C& E auditorium.

The 2009 Board was impressed with the way she handled her audience - very fun and enjoyable afternoon with great learning to take home with - as she introduced speech sounds, simple linguistics and better communication skills for librarians and other information professionals in workplaces.

After the charming lady who demonstrated utilization of suprasegmental aspect of speech like intonation, stress, pitch and juncture and iterated to all to BE CLEAR, STAY POSITIVE, LISTEN ACTIVELY, LEARN FROM EXPERIENCE, came Isidro Padpad (C & E Senior Manager) who introduced on-line resources and their benefits while Villamor Cabral (ISE Education Consultant) aimed at bibliotheraphy sessions with PAARL members in the future.

The Association's ex-officio, JRU Director Loreto Garcia, emceed the affair and seen enjoying PAARL's speaking activity were 2002 president Dr. Teresita Hernandez (Centro Escolar University) and VPA Dr. Victor M. Arguelles (University of Batangas).

Forty-four (44) institutions sent their library personnel with Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (10) with the most number of attendees. Second in rank is Philippine Normal University with seven (7) LIS students; third, Colegio San Agustin with five (5) while Arrellano University had four (4). Fifth in rank with three (3) were UPHS-GMA, MCU, Elizabeth Seton School, Don Bosco-Mandaluyong, Diliman Preparatory School, CEU, Assumption–Antipolo, and Adamson.

Seventeen (17) institutions provided two (2) each and came from UB, UST, UPHR-Molino, UP NISMED, UP, STC, St. Luke’s, St. Jude College, SPIST, PWU-Manila, PWU-JASMS, Pasig Catholic College, OLICS, OLFU-Valenzuela, NCBA-Taytay, NCBA-Cubao, Letran-Calamba, and Ateneo Prof. School; while fourteen (14), one (1) each; Torres del Rosario College, SJNHS, San Beda College-Alabang' PWU-QC, PCC-Annex, PCC, NCBA-Fairview, NCBA, Marist School, DepED, Assumption-Makati, Arellano University-Malabon, AICS and ACSAT-Baliwag. Statistics presented here do not include attendance of present board of directors.
