Mula sa isang panayam na ginawa ni Gng Frias kay Ramos: Hello Singapore project of PAARL, Inc. is highly enriching and I would recommend a repeat in the months to come. Library personnel who missed the first one will find it very engaging while invoked by the desire to achieve superlative level of library professional service to clients with shown evidences of CUSTOMER SERVICE and patron-driven attitude of Singapore libraries and their personnel; and breathtaking to inquire and know about one's life in Singapore, how multicultures (CHINESE, MALAYS and INDIANS) got intertwined so easily with clients that are so focused on what each does at hand inside all full-packed public libraries of Singapore from Monday to Sunday.

Please try it again tomorrow morning. Happy to have served you.

Hello SINGAPORE!

Dear Colleagues and Friends:

Greetings from PAARL!

The Philippine Association of Academic and Research Librarians (PAARL)is pleased to invite you to its 4-day educational tour in Asia’s renowned Garden City – Singapore. The activity, dubbed as “Benchmarking Tour in Singapore Libraries” will be conducted from October 21-24, 2010.

This year’s most awaited international exposure will bring together the excitement of visiting Singapore’s selected state-of-the-art libraries, a chance to learn in a seminar-orientation with Singapore’s high-profile information specialists, experience cultural immersion and warm hospitality of its people and a glimpse to Singapore’s top destinations and sceneries. Specifically, the tour aims to:

1. observe the latest technological progress and infrastructures in
selected Singapore libraries;

2. learn new trends and meaningful concepts of library services from
selected Singapore libraries;

3. foster professional and cultural exchange between Filipino and
Singaporean librarians;

4. establish a linkage among Singapore library associations for future
collaborative undertakings in the region.

For details and inquiries, please contact the undersigned or any member of the
Board of Directors. We will appreciate if you could help us disseminate this
information to our colleagues in the profession.

Thank you and we look forward to welcoming you to Singapore.

Dr. Cortez says “Malus kayu pu" to PAARL, Inc.

MESSAGE OF DR. JAIME V. CORTEZ, AVP FOR ACADEMIC AFFAIRS, TO THE PHILIPPINE ASSOCIATION OF ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH, LIBRARIANS (PAARL), INCORPORATED
Multi-Purpose Hall, San Francisco de Javier Building
19 August 2010

Ladies and gentlemen:

Good morning. As the Academic Vice President of this University, I welcome you all to Holy Angel for the seminar-workshop of your organization, the Philippine Association of Academic and Research Librarians, Incorporated. In Kapampangan, we say “Malus kayu pu;” and that of course means “Welcome.” Sincerely, I am glad that you have chosen our University as the venue of this very important national affair. Feel free then to make our school your home away from home throughout the duration of your seminar.

I maintain the belief that librarians will always remain as indispensable members of the academic community. Why? Because you are the caretakers of our repository of knowledge. In close coordination with you, the students and the faculty find fellowship with the best minds of today and of years bygone as they explore and read the vast wealth of intellectual treasures stored in the libraries. Indeed, you are our partners in pursuing two of the three vital functions of higher educational institution: instruction and research.

The accelerating pace of change, particularly in information technology, should not leave the library profession unprepared, nor should reduce to irrelevance and oblivion the role of librarians. On the contrary, librarians should not only keep pace with the avalanche of change around us but should in fact proactively lead the academic community in the pursuit of these changes. Thus, this seminar-workshop.

In spite of and despite of technology, the human component of the library must remain, for even if computers can do wonders in our information age, the librarian’s thinking and feeling capacities can never be equalled by the machine. Librarians must therefore be trained in providing web-based services and navigating around the vast reservoir of e-resources, in addition to their traditional domains, if they were to remain effective and efficient in their work

In closing, I wish to borrow a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson. He said, “If we encounter a man of great intellect, we should ask him what books he reads.” To this, I would like to add: we should also ask him what sites he visits and by whose guidance he visits those sites. Probably, behind him is a competent librarian...

Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. Have a pleasant stay in Holy Angel.

Laus Deo semper. Praise God always.

Manila Bulletin: Editorial

Raising the Librarians’ teaching identity through lifelong learning modules and portfolios July 6, 2010, 4:30pm
Source: http://www.mb.com.ph

The Philippine Association of Academic and Research Librarians (PAARL), Inc. (Every Librarian’s Association), in cooperation with the Academic Booksellers Association of the Philippines (ABAP), is hosting today a lecture-forum on “Raising the Librarians’ Teaching Identity through Lifelong Learning Modules and Portfolios” at the Seminar Room of Megatrade Hall, SM Megamall, in Mandaluyong City.

The event is part of the weeklong Philippine Academic Book Fair, which runs July 6-10 this year. The lecture-forum seeks to campaign for information literacy programs for all ages. It specifically aims to raise awareness of the importance of the librarians’ teaching identity through lifelong learning modules and portfolios.

It hopes to adapt a healthy culture of teaching – pedagogies, lesson planning and evaluation methods – while designing services as personnel in a library environment. Participants will be encouraged to take full advantage of technologies relevant to their professions.

As a nationwide professional organization of librarians in Philippine academic and research institutions, the PAARL aims to disseminate information on research and academic library work, promote the professional welfare of Filipino librarians, and foster collegiality and camaraderie among its members.

Despite the proliferation of e-resources that are easily accessible in the digital environment, the physical library remains relevant and useful and the librarian’s profession significant. Thus, efforts to equip librarians with the necessary tools to address the various demands for information in all forms is a welcome initiative.

We congratulate the Philippine Association of Academic and Research Librarians, led by their President Christopher C. Paras, its Officers and Members, on the occasion of their lecture-forum that seeks to raise the profession of librarianship to a higher level. We wish them all the best and success in all their endeavors.

Apart from the normal advice on how to live a healthy lifestyle, a connection between health and productivity in the library workplace will be discussed. Participants will gain knowledge and tools on how to improve their own health and how this will improve their productivity. For libraries, it means greater outputs and more satisfaction and possibly faster promotions and rewarding incentives for librarians. This could result in better equipped personnel and a higher level of motivation towards their careers. In the end, when each individual improves his own lifestyle and institutions benefits from employing more balanced people.
